Survive Disaster! Introduction | |

In
spite of everything we do to prevent disasters, they happen. We build
barriers to keep out avalanches, floods, volcanic activity, fires, and storms.
But natural disasters can overwhelm every one of those barriers. The levees
of New Orleans held for many years, but were destroyed by a storm surge from
Hurricane Katrina. The great city of Kobe, Japan, was designed to withstand
enormous earthquakes, but was destroyed by a large quake—the most costly
disaster in history. No matter what we do, we face powers
greater than ourselves. People involved in disaster preparedness have a
saying: Nature bats last! In the western United States, typical disasters are winter storms, flash floods, floods, tornadoes, thunderstorms, hail storms, earthquakes, wildfires, and volcanic eruptions. The Midwest often has tornadoes, thunderstorms, hailstorms, floods, blizzards, and wildfires. The south often has hurricanes, floods, thunderstorms, and tornadoes. In the Northeast, typical disasters are winter storms and floods. All mountain areas are subject to avalanches, winter storms, and thunderstorms. All coastal areas can get tsunamis. All areas are subject to fires, HAZMAT disasters, and terrorism. You must plan to survive a disaster. You also need to gather some survival supplies and learn some survival skills. Over the last century, most people have lost their survival skills. We depend on fresh drinking water from the faucet, electricity in the outlet, fuel at the gas station, and electronic devices to communicate and get information. People take emergency services for granted. The negligent government response to Hurricane Katrina showed us that we are responsible for our own survival! We can't rely on the government to help us! You must ensure your own survival! After a major disaster, you will probably have to take care of yourself for at least 3 days. Plan on it. The State of Florida agrees. It is telling its citizens to be ready to take care of themselves for at least 3 days. If you don't have survival skills, if you can't produce your own drinking water, if you can't protect yourself from weather and predatory creatures, you will be in big trouble during and after a disaster. People with these skills are much more likely to survive a major disaster. When it's time to evacuate, they know what to take and take it. They know where to go and how to get there. They know how to find what they need to survive. Survive Disaster! teaches you these skills. Our nation is facing a long, hard recovery period after several terrible natural disasters. Another tremendous disaster may not happen for a long time. But another one will happen. It may strike near you. Survive Disaster! shows you how to prepare for a disaster. Learn these skills before a disaster happens to you. Survive Disaster! has hundreds of topics, articles, books, movies, information sheets, and links to websites.
